Kier Wraps Up £68 Million Surgical Center Project in Scotland

Kier completed construction of a new £68 million surgical centre at NHS Golden Jubilee in Clydebank, Scotland.

The project increased the hospital's patient capacity, with the aim of enabling the treatment of thousands of people waiting to access important care and procedures.

Scottish First Minister, John Swinney, visited the project to mark the significant milestone in the hospital's expansion and opening of the centre.

Kier built the surgical centre on behalf of NHS Golden Jubilee and worked closely with the hospital and the Scottish Government to deliver a range of facilities to help the hospital meet the growing demand for key elective specialties.

The centre was developed with input from patients and staff, and enhances the hospital's capacity for general and orthopaedic surgery, diagnostic procedures and endoscopy.

The modern new facilities include:

  • five state-of-the-art orthopaedic theatres
  • Central sterilising and processing department
  • Five endoscopy procedure rooms – two of which are equipped with specialist training equipment

Modern Methods of Construction were used to deliver the project efficiently, and the concrete frame and brick-clad façade were manufactured completely off-site, reducing construction time.

Phil McDowell, regional director at Kier Construction North & Scotland, said: "I am delighted to see NHS Golden Jubilee's new Surgical Centre open and treating patients.

"This state-of-the-art facility represents a significant leap forward in Scotland's healthcare infrastructure, helping to meet the growing demand for key elective specialties.

Gordon James, chief executive of NHS Golden Jubilee, said: "This expansion will not only improve patient care but also significantly enhance staff training opportunities and clinical excellence."

Last month, Kier Group announced its orderbook rose £100 million to £10.9 billion, in its latest annual general meeting (AGM).

The company's revenue for the year ended 30 June 2024 grew 16.6 per cent to £4 billion, up from £3.4 billion in the previous year.
